About Wally Westlake
Waldon Thomas "Wally" Westlake, a right-handed-hitting outfielder born in 1920 in Gridley, California, signed with the Brooklyn organization out of a 1940 tryout camp and worked his way up through Elmira, Dayton, and Merced before starring for the Pacific Coast League's Oakland Oaks (1942-1946) under manager Casey Stengel, from whom the Pittsburgh Pirates purchased him. He reached the majors with Pittsburgh in 1947 and spent 10 seasons (1947-1956) with the Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians, Baltimore Orioles, and Philadelphia Phillies, playing mostly left field. He was named to the 1951 National League All-Star team, entering the game as a late defensive replacement. As a Pirate he hit for the cycle twice, on July 30, 1948 against Brooklyn and June 14, 1949 against the Boston Braves. He reached the 1954 World Series with Cleveland's 111-win Indians, who were swept by the New York Giants. Over 958 games he batted .272 with 848 hits, 127 home runs, and 539 RBI. Westlake lived to age 98, dying in 2019.
