About Dave Hoskins
A right-handed pitcher born in Greenwood, Mississippi in 1917, Dave Hoskins broke into pro ball with the Negro Leagues, starring for the Homestead Grays (1944-1946) as both a hurler and hitter and sharing in the Grays' 1944 championship. On Satchel Paige's recommendation, Indians GM Hank Greenberg signed him, and in 1952 Hoskins integrated the Double-A Texas League as the first Black player with the Dallas Eagles, enduring death threats yet turning in a landmark 22-10 season with a 2.12 ERA, a .328 average, and All-Star honors while boosting Dallas attendance. Dubbed the "Savior" by Eagles fans, he reached Cleveland in 1953, going 9-3 (3.99 ERA) as one of the AL's best rookies; on September 7, 1953 he and Paige became the first two Black pitchers to start against each other in a big-league game. Over two seasons (1953-1954) with the pennant-winning Indians he finished 9-4 with a 3.81 ERA. He was an inaugural Texas League Hall of Fame inductee (2004). This card carries an uncorrected error, listing his birth as Aug. 23, 1925 instead of Aug. 3, 1917.
