A New York Giants "bonus baby," Joey Amalfitano (John Joseph Amalfitano, born January 23, 1934, in San Pedro, California) signed with the Giants in 1954 out of Loyola University of Los Angeles and USC. Under the era's bonus rules he had to stay on the big-league roster, so he sat the bench in 1954 and 1955 without playing the field - he was a rookie member of the 1954 World Series champions and watched from the bullpen as Willie Mays made "The Catch" off Vic Wertz. This 1955 Topps card is his rookie card. A right-handed utility infielder (primarily second base), he played 10 MLB seasons - the Giants (1954-55, 1960-61, 1963), Houston Colt .45s (1962), and Chicago Cubs (1964-67) - batting .244 with 418 hits, 9 home runs, and 123 RBI over 643 games; he was never an All-Star. He is far better known for his long second career in uniform: a coach for five clubs, interim-then-full manager of the Cubs from 1979-81 (66-116), and the Los Angeles Dodgers' third-base coach for 16 seasons (1983-98), including their 1988 World Series title.
