About Bob Lennon
Robert Albert "Archie" Lennon was a left-handed-hitting outfielder whose New York Giants card #119 is his rookie card, issued on the strength of one of the great power seasons in minor-league history. A Brooklyn native, he was signed by the Dodgers in 1945 at age 16 after an Ebbets Field tryout, and it was for the Double-A Nashville Vols in 1954 that he made his name: playing home games at bandbox Sulphur Dell (right-field fence just 262 feet away), he won the Southern Association Triple Crown with a record 64 home runs, a .345 average, and a league-leading 161 RBI, 210 hits, and 139 runs. The teammates who dubbed him "Archie" said his thick Brooklyn accent evoked a character from the radio comedy "Duffy's Tavern." That barrage earned a late-1954 callup to the pennant-winning Giants, but injuries and pitching he couldn't solve limited him to just 38 big-league games (.165, 1 HR, 4 RBI) with the Giants and Cubs; his lone major-league homer came fittingly at Ebbets Field, off Sal Maglie in 1957. He hit 278 home runs across a 16-year minor-league career and is remembered as a slugger undone by circumstance rather than talent.
