About Ted Kluszewski
Signed by the Cincinnati Reds off the Indiana University campus, where he starred in football and baseball and caught scouts' eyes during wartime spring trainings, first baseman Ted Kluszewski (1924-1988) debuted in 1947 and played 15 major-league seasons, most of them (1947-1957) with Cincinnati before stops with Pittsburgh, the White Sox and the Los Angeles Angels. A left-handed power hitter, he was a four-time All-Star (1953-1956) whose peak was staggering: he led the National League with 49 home runs and 141 RBI in 1954, hitting .326 while striking out only 35 times, and finished MVP runner-up to Willie Mays. Nicknamed "Big Klu," the 6-foot-2, 225-pound slugger famously cut the sleeves off his jersey to free his massive arms. He batted .298 with 279 home runs and 1,028 RBI over 1,718 games, and starred for the 1959 White Sox, batting .391 with three homers and 10 RBI in the World Series. Cincinnati retired his No. 18 in 1998.
