About Ray Jablonski

A hard-hitting third baseman born in Chicago in 1926, Ray Jablonski signed with the Boston Red Sox in 1947 after an Army stint, and the St. Louis Cardinals acquired him in the 1948 minor-league draft. He tore up the minors, capturing the 1951 Carolina League Triple Crown and MVP honors before debuting with the Cardinals in 1953. As a rookie he clubbed 21 home runs with 112 RBI and finished third in NL Rookie of the Year voting. In 1954 he hit a career-best .296 with 104 RBI and started at third base for the National League in the All-Star Game. That December, with Ken Boyer ready to take over the hot corner, St. Louis traded Jablonski (with pitcher Gerry Staley) to the Cincinnati Redlegs for reliever Frank Smith - the team shown on this 1955 Topps card. Nicknamed "Jabbo," he played eight big-league seasons (1953-1960) for the Cardinals, Redlegs, Cubs, Giants and Athletics, batting .268 with 687 hits, 83 home runs and 438 RBI over 812 games. He died in 1985 at age 58.
