About Chuck Harmon
A three-sport star from Washington, Indiana, Charles Byron "Chuck" Harmon led his high school to back-to-back state basketball titles and co-captained the University of Toledo team that reached the 1943 NIT final before he turned to baseball. He signed with the St. Louis Browns organization in 1947 (after a brief, four-game Negro-leagues stint with the Indianapolis Clowns under the alias "Charlie Fine" to protect his eligibility), hit .300-plus for five straight minor-league seasons, and was acquired by Cincinnati in 1952. On April 17, 1954, Harmon became the first African-American player in Reds/Redlegs franchise history, entering as a pinch-hitter in the same game moments after Puerto Rican Nino Escalera. A right-handed utility man who covered third base, first base, and the outfield, he earned the nickname "The Glove" for keeping a specialized mitt for every position. Over four seasons (1954-1957) with the Redlegs, St. Louis Cardinals, and Philadelphia Phillies, he batted .238 with 7 home runs and 59 RBI in 289 games. Never a Hall of Famer, he was later honored by the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame (2014); he died in 2019 at age 94.
