About Art Fowler
This is the rookie card of John Arthur "Art" Fowler (1922-2007), a right-handed pitcher from Converse, South Carolina, who signed with the New York Giants organization before the 1944 season and toiled a full decade in the minors (140-94), leading the Southern Association in ERA (3.03) with the Atlanta Crackers in 1953. He finally reached the majors at age 31, debuting April 17, 1954, and posting his best year for the Cincinnati Redlegs that season: 12-10 with a 3.83 ERA over 227.2 innings. Fowler pitched nine big-league seasons for the Redlegs (1954-57), Los Angeles Dodgers (1959), and expansion Los Angeles Angels (1961-64), finishing 54-51 with a 4.03 ERA, 539 strikeouts, and 32 saves across 362 games. He is far better remembered, however, as Billy Martin's inseparable pitching coach and drinking buddy, following Martin from the Twins and Tigers to the Rangers, A's, and Yankees; his star pupil, Ron Guidry, won the 1978 AL Cy Young Award. Fowler died in 2007 at 84.
