About Bud Podbielan
Clarence Anthony "Bud" Podbielan (born March 6, 1924, in Curlew, Washington; died October 26, 1982, in Syracuse, New York) was a right-handed pitcher who spent nine seasons in the major leagues from 1949 to 1959. He broke in with the Brooklyn Dodgers (1949-1952) before spending the bulk of his career with the Cincinnati Reds/Redlegs (1952-1955 and 1957), the club he is pictured with on this 1955 Topps card, and closing out with the Cleveland Indians in 1959. Never an All-Star, Podbielan compiled a 25-42 record with a 4.49 ERA and 242 strikeouts over 172 games, including 20 complete games and 2 shutouts. His most notable outing came on May 18, 1953, when, pitching for Cincinnati, he walked a franchise-record thirteen batters over ten innings against his former Brooklyn teammates. As card #153, a semi-high number in the set's first series, his card is somewhat tougher to find than the more common low numbers.
