About Roy McMillan

Signed off a 1947 tryout camp in McKinney, Texas by Reds scout Hack Miller and seasoned in the Longhorn League, Roy McMillan reached Cincinnati in 1951 and became one of the finest defensive shortstops of his era. He anchored the Reds/Redlegs through 1960 before playing for the Milwaukee Braves (1961-64) and New York Mets (1964-66), a 16-season career. A two-time NL All-Star (1956-57), he won a Gold Glove in each of the award's first three seasons (1957-59), and led the league in fielding percentage four times, forming a celebrated double-play combination with second baseman Johnny Temple. His glovework earned the nickname "Mr. Shortstop." A light-hitting but durable regular, McMillan batted .243 with 1,639 hits, 68 home runs, and 594 RBI over 2,093 games, later managing the Mets in 1975. He was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1971. This high-number card falls in the tougher-to-find second series.

Variations & how to tell them apart

High Number (#161-210)

Series 2 (#161-210) shipped in the fall against the new football-card season, so retailers cut their orders and far fewer were printed. As a result the set's biggest high-number names - Roberto Clemente (RC), Willie Mays, Yogi Berra, Phil Rizzuto, Gil Hodges and Duke Snider - are tougher than low-number stars such as Williams, Robinson and Aaron.
