About Gene Conley

Gene Conley remains one of baseball's great two-sport stories. A towering 6-foot-8 right-hander, he signed with the Boston Braves in 1950 out of Washington State, then dominated the minors - winning 23 games for Toledo in 1953 and taking American Association MVP and Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year honors. He pitched 11 big-league seasons (1952-1963) for the Braves, Phillies, and Red Sox, finishing 91-96 with a 3.82 ERA and 888 strikeouts. A three-time All-Star (1954, 1955, 1959), he pitched a perfect extra inning in the 1955 All-Star Game at Milwaukee - striking out Al Kaline, Mickey Vernon, and Al Rosen - and won it. He was a member of the Braves' 1957 World Series championship club. Remarkably, Conley also starred in the NBA as a Boston Celtics forward, winning three straight titles (1959-1961), making him the only athlete ever to win championships in both Major League Baseball and the NBA. This is his second-year Topps card; his rookie is 1954 Topps.
