About Ray Crone
A control-first right-handed pitcher, Ray Crone signed with the Boston Braves out of high school in 1949 at age 17. After a standout 1953 at Class AA Jacksonville - 19 wins and a 2.38 ERA leading the Sally League, on a team that included a young Hank Aaron - he reached the majors with the relocated Milwaukee Braves on April 13, 1954, posting a sparkling 2.02 ERA as a rookie. Over five seasons with Milwaukee (1954-1957) and the New York/San Francisco Giants (1957-1958), Crone went 30-30 with a 3.87 ERA and 260 strikeouts across 137 games. His best won-lost mark came in 1955 (10-9, 3.46 ERA) and his most wins in 1956 (11). On June 15, 1957, he was traded with Danny O'Connell and Bobby Thomson to the Giants for Hall of Fame second baseman Red Schoendienst - a deal that cost him a ring, as the Braves won the World Series that fall. He later scouted for over three decades. This Series 1 card pictures Crone in his Milwaukee Braves uniform during his peak big-league years.
