About Dave Jolly
A right-handed relief pitcher from Stony Point, North Carolina, David Jolly was signed by the St. Louis Browns as an amateur in early 1946 and began at Class D Mooresville, where he played alongside future Hall of Famer Hoyt Wilhelm and likely picked up the knuckleball that became his best pitch. After seven minor-league seasons, the Boston Braves drafted him from the Yankees organization in the 1952 Rule 5 draft, and he reached the majors in 1953. He spent all five of his big-league seasons with the Milwaukee Braves (1953-1957), working almost entirely out of the bullpen. His finest year was 1954, when he went 11-6 with a 2.43 ERA and 10 saves over 47 games, finishing among the National League leaders in games pitched, games finished, and saves. Jolly closed his career as a member of the Braves' 1957 World Series championship team, retiring with a 16-14 record, 3.77 ERA, 19 saves, and 155 strikeouts in 160 games; a capable hitter for a pitcher, he batted .292. Bullpen mate Ernie Johnson nicknamed the quiet, reserved Jolly "Gabby" as a joke. He died of a brain tumor in 1963 at age 38, and a ballfield near Stony Point was later named in his honor. This card carries an uncorrected note about his 1953 rookie ERA on the back.
