About Wayne Terwilliger
A World War II Marine turned big-league second baseman, Willard Wayne "Twig" Terwilliger enlisted in 1943 and saw combat at Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima before starring at Western Michigan and signing with the Chicago Cubs, debuting in 1949. Over nine seasons (1949-1960) he played for the Cubs, Brooklyn Dodgers, Washington Senators (1953-1954, the team pictured on this card), New York Giants, and Kansas City Athletics, batting .240 with 501 hits, 22 home runs, and 162 RBI across 666 games. His truest calling was coaching: a baseball lifer, he coached third base for the Senators/Rangers under Ted Williams and spent 1986-1994 as the Minnesota Twins' first-base coach, earning World Series rings with the 1987 and 1991 champions. He kept fungoing into his 80s with the independent St. Paul Saints and Fort Worth Cats, and titled his 2006 autobiography Terwilliger Bunts One. This #34 card carries a documented error: his birth year was misprinted and should read 1925. Terwilliger died in 2021 at age 95.
