About Dean Stone
A hard-throwing 6-foot-4 left-hander born in 1930 in Moline, Illinois, Dean Stone entered pro ball in 1949 and worked his way up the minors, tossing two no-hitters in 1952 before reaching the Washington Senators for his big-league debut on September 13, 1953. He pitched eight major-league seasons (1953-1963) for the Senators, Red Sox, Cardinals, Colt .45s, White Sox, and Orioles, finishing 29-39 with a 4.47 ERA and 380 strikeouts over 215 games, most of them in relief. His career year was 1954, when he went 12-10 with a 3.22 ERA and earned his lone All-Star selection. Stone is remembered for one of baseball's oddest feats: he won the 1954 All-Star Game without retiring a batter. Entering in the top of the eighth with the AL trailing, he threw out Red Schoendienst trying to steal home (the NL argued balk, but umpire Bill Stewart disagreed), then the AL rallied in its half for an 11-9 win, making Stone the pitcher of record.
