About Camilo Pascual

Signed by the Washington Senators as an amateur free agent out of Havana, Cuba, right-hander Camilo Pascual reached the majors in 1954 and pitched 18 seasons (1954-1971) for the Senators/Minnesota Twins, the expansion Washington Senators, Reds, Dodgers and Indians. Armed with an overhand curveball he learned from Cuban great Adolfo Luque - a pitch Ted Williams called the most feared curve in the American League - Pascual was a seven-time All-Star who led the AL in strikeouts three straight years (221 in 1961, 206 in 1962, 202 in 1963), the first AL pitcher to do so since Bob Feller in 1946-48. He posted back-to-back 20-win seasons, going 20-11 in 1962 and 21-9 with a 2.46 ERA in 1963. He finished 174-170 with a 3.63 ERA and 2,167 strikeouts. Nicknamed "Little Potato" - a play on brother Carlos's Cuban nickname "Patato" - Pascual is enshrined in the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame. This 1955 Topps card is his rookie card.
