About Bunky Stewart

A slender 6-foot, 155-pound left-hander, Veston Goff "Bunky" Stewart was born January 7, 1931, in Jasper, North Carolina, and attended East Carolina University before turning pro with the New Bern Bears of the Coastal Plain League. He signed on with the Washington Senators and reached the majors at age 21, debuting on May 4, 1952. Stewart spent his entire big-league career with Washington, appearing in parts of five seasons from 1952 through 1956, though he pitched regularly only in 1954 (29 games) and 1956 (33 games). That final 1956 campaign was his busiest, as he logged 105 innings, won five games, and saved two. Over 72 career appearances he went 5-11 with a 6.01 ERA, three saves, and 77 strikeouts. This 1955 Topps issue is Stewart's rookie card, which the checklist lists under his given name, Veston Stewart. After baseball he worked in retail and real estate, and he died October 3, 2007, in Wilmington, North Carolina.
