1955 Topps #169 Bob Oldis

About Bob Oldis
A right-handed catcher from Preston, Iowa, Robert Carl "Bucky" Oldis entered pro ball after a 1949 tryout camp in Cocoa, Florida, signing with the Washington Senators organization and climbing through their Class D and Southern Association farm clubs. He debuted with Washington on April 28, 1953, and played parts of seven big-league seasons across the Senators (1953-55), Pittsburgh Pirates (1960-61), and Philadelphia Phillies (1962-64), a light-hitting but sure-handed defensive backstop. Over 135 games he batted .237 with 56 hits, 1 home run, and 22 RBI. His career highlight came as the third catcher, behind Smoky Burgess and Hal Smith, on the 1960 World Series champion Pirates, who upset the Yankees in seven games; Oldis appeared in Games 4 and 5 as a late-inning defensive replacement. After retiring he became the Phillies' bullpen coach (1964-66) and later a longtime scout, earning a second World Series ring with the 2003 Florida Marlins. This card #169 is a Series 2 high number, and its back carries an uncorrected wrong birth date (it should read Jan. 5, 1928). Oldis died in 2025 at age 97.

Variations & how to tell them apart
High Number (#161-210)
Series 2 (#161-210) shipped in the fall against the new football-card season, so retailers cut their orders and far fewer were printed. As a result the set's biggest high-number names - Roberto Clemente (RC), Willie Mays, Yogi Berra, Phil Rizzuto, Gil Hodges and Duke Snider - are tougher than low-number stars such as Williams, Robinson and Aaron.
Card-back note
Uncorrected error on the back: Birth date should be Jan. 5, 1928 (shown Jan. 15, 1930).
