About Harmon Killebrew

Harmon Killebrew signed with the Washington Senators as a 17-year-old "bonus baby" in June 1954 after Idaho Senator Herman Welker tipped off the club to the powerful teenager from Payette, Idaho; the bonus rules forced him to sit on the big-league roster, and he barely played early on (starting just 17 games in 1955), which makes this #124 his true rookie card. A right-handed slugger who manned first base, third base, and left field, he spent 22 seasons (1954-1975) with the Senators/Minnesota Twins and a final year with the Kansas City Royals. Nicknamed "Killer" and "Hammerin' Harmon" for his prodigious power, he was a 13-time All-Star, won six home-run titles and three RBI crowns, and captured the 1969 AL MVP with 49 homers and 140 RBI. He powered the Twins to the 1965 World Series (a seven-game loss to the Dodgers, with a homer off Don Drysdale). Killebrew retired with 573 home runs, 1,584 RBI, and a .256 average over 2,435 games, was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1984, and died in 2011.
