About Gair Allie
Gair Roosevelt Allie (October 28, 1931 - October 4, 2016) was a right-handed shortstop and third baseman from Statesville, North Carolina. He signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in September 1951 for a $20,000 bonus and reached the majors in 1954, when he was handed the everyday shortstop job because incumbent Dick Groat was away on military service. That 1954 campaign was his only big-league season: he started 92 games at short and 18 at third, batting .199 with 83 hits (8 doubles, 6 triples, 3 home runs) and 30 RBI over 121 games. A right-ankle fracture suffered playing winter ball in Cuba had limited him to 32 games in 1953, and after 1954 he never returned to the majors, spending the rest of his career (1952-1961) in the minors with clubs such as the New Orleans Pelicans, Hollywood Stars, and Columbus Jets before retiring in 1961.
