About Dale Long
A left-handed-hitting first baseman born in 1926 in Springfield, Missouri, Dale Long broke into pro ball in the mid-1940s and reached the majors in 1951. Over 10 big-league seasons (1951-1963) he batted .267 with 132 home runs and 467 RBI in 1,013 games for eight clubs, including the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cubs, Giants, Yankees and Senators; this 1955 Topps card is his rookie card. In 1956 with Pittsburgh he authored one of the game's most famous feats, homering in eight consecutive games (May 19-28) - a major-league record since matched only by Don Mattingly (1987) and Ken Griffey Jr. (1993) and still the sole National League mark - and started the All-Star Game at first base for the NL. In 1958 with the Cubs he became the first left-handed-throwing catcher in the majors since 1902. He won a title with the 1962 Yankees, and in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series delivered a ninth-inning pinch single that tied it 9-9 just before Bill Mazeroski's walk-off. Long died in 1991.
