About Dick Groat

A shortstop and two-sport star, Dick Groat signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in June 1952 straight out of Duke University, where he was a two-time basketball All-American and national College Player of the Year, and reached the majors with no minor-league experience. After a year of Army service, he settled in as the Pirates' everyday shortstop, pairing with second baseman Bill Mazeroski to form one of the era's best double-play combinations. His peak came in 1960, when he won the National League batting title at .325 and was named NL MVP - the first Pirate ever to win the award - while anchoring Pittsburgh's World Series champions. He won a second title with the 1964 St. Louis Cardinals and was an eight-time All-Star. Groat also played for the Phillies and Giants, retiring after 1967 with a .286 average, 2,138 hits, 39 home runs, and 707 RBI over 1,929 games. He died in 2023 at age 92.
