About Curt Roberts

Curtis Benjamin Roberts (born August 16, 1929, in Pineland, Texas; raised in Oakland, California) was a right-handed second baseman best remembered as the first Black player in Pittsburgh Pirates history. A product of Oakland's McClymonds High School - the same school that produced Frank Robinson and Bill Russell - Roberts began his professional career as a teenager with the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Leagues, alongside stars such as Satchel Paige. Signed by the Boston Braves and soon acquired by Pittsburgh, he converted from shortstop to second base and built a reputation as a slick fielder, leading the minor leagues in fielding at his position. He broke the Pirates' color barrier in his major-league debut on April 13, 1954, at Forbes Field, tripling and doubling that day. Roberts played three big-league seasons (1954-1956), all with Pittsburgh, batting .223 with 128 hits, 1 home run, and 40 RBI before Hall of Famer Bill Mazeroski took over at second. A quiet pioneer, he befriended and counseled a young Roberto Clemente on enduring racial hostility. Roberts died on November 14, 1969, at age 40, struck by a car while changing a tire in Oakland.
