About Rube Walker
Albert Bluford "Rube" Walker (May 16, 1926 - December 12, 1992) was a left-handed-hitting catcher out of Lenoir, North Carolina, who earned his nickname as a boy: while serving as batboy for the local Lenoir club, he idolized star player Rube Robinson. Signed out of Lenoir High School in 1944 into the Chicago Cubs' farm system, Walker debuted with the Cubs in 1948 and reached Brooklyn in the June 1951 blockbuster that sent Andy Pafko's Cubs to the Dodgers. He spent the balance of his 11-year career (1948-1958) backing up Hall of Famer Roy Campanella, most memorably catching the deciding October 3, 1951 pennant playoff when Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard 'Round the World" beat the Dodgers. Walker hit .227 with 360 hits, 35 home runs, and 192 RBI over 608 games, and won a World Series ring with Brooklyn's lone 1955 championship team, the club this Series 1 card depicts. His greater legacy came later: as the Mets' pitching coach (1968-1981) he shaped the 1969 "Miracle Mets" staff of Tom Seaver and Nolan Ryan and is widely credited with popularizing the five-man rotation.
