About Jackie Robinson

A UCLA four-sport star, Jackie Robinson signed with the Negro Leagues' Kansas City Monarchs in 1945 before Dodgers GM Branch Rickey inked him that October; after a 1946 season at Triple-A Montreal he debuted with Brooklyn on April 15, 1947, breaking Major League Baseball's color barrier. Primarily a second baseman, he spent all 10 of his big-league seasons (1947-1956) with the Dodgers, batting .311 with 1,518 hits, 137 home runs, 734 RBI, and 197 stolen bases. He won the inaugural Rookie of the Year in 1947 and the 1949 NL MVP, taking that year's batting title at .342, and earned six straight All-Star nods (1949-1954). This card captures him during Brooklyn's lone World Series championship season of 1955, when he famously stole home in Game 1 against the Yankees. Elected to the Hall of Fame in 1962, his number 42 was retired across all of baseball in 1997. The card exists with a minor Dodgers-logo corner variation.
