About Gil Hodges

A cornerstone of the "Boys of Summer" Brooklyn Dodgers, Gil Hodges declined a 1941 Detroit offer to attend St. Joseph's College, then signed with Brooklyn through scout Stanley Feezle and debuted in 1943 before serving as a Marine on Okinawa, where he earned a Bronze Star. Converted from catcher to first base, the right-handed slugger played 18 seasons (1943, 1947-1961 with the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers; 1962-1963 Mets), batting .273 with 1,921 hits, 370 home runs, and 1,274 RBI over 2,071 games. An eight-time All-Star (1949-55, 1957) and three-time Gold Glove winner (1957-59), he hit four home runs in one game on August 31, 1950 against the Boston Braves and won World Series titles in 1955 and 1959. Beloved in Brooklyn - during his 0-for-21 slump in the 1952 Series, fans sent supportive letters and a priest urged prayers rather than boos - he later managed the "Miracle" 1969 Mets to the championship. Hodges died in 1972 and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2022; this scarce high number honors that induction.

Variations & how to tell them apart

High Number (#161-210)

Series 2 (#161-210) shipped in the fall against the new football-card season, so retailers cut their orders and far fewer were printed. As a result the set's biggest high-number names - Roberto Clemente (RC), Willie Mays, Yogi Berra, Phil Rizzuto, Gil Hodges and Duke Snider - are tougher than low-number stars such as Williams, Robinson and Aaron.
