About Billy Herman
Billy Herman (William Jennings Bryan Herman, 1909-1992) is pictured on this card as a Brooklyn Dodgers coach, but he earned Cooperstown as one of the finest second basemen of his era. Signed by the Louisville Colonels in 1928 and converted to second base in the minors, he reached the Chicago Cubs in 1931 and starred there through 1941 before stints with Brooklyn (1941-43, 1946), the Boston Braves, and player-manager duty in Pittsburgh (1947). A polished hit-and-run artist and superb fielder who still holds several NL defensive records for second basemen, Herman was a 10-time All-Star (1934-43). His finest year was 1935, when he batted .341 and led the National League in hits (227) and doubles (57). He hit .304 with 2,345 hits, 47 home runs, and 839 RBI over 15 seasons. Casey Stengel nicknamed him "John the Baptist" for the way he crowded the plate. Herman played in four World Series (all losses) and coached Brooklyn's 1955 champions; he was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1975.
