About Jim Hughes
James Robert Hughes (born March 21, 1923, in Chicago; died August 13, 2001) was a right-handed relief pitcher who reached the majors with the Brooklyn Dodgers in September 1952 at age 29, after serving in the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II's Pacific theater and starring for the Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate in Montreal. Over six seasons (1952-1957) with Brooklyn, the Chicago Cubs, and the Chicago White Sox, he worked in 172 games, all but one in relief. His banner year was 1954, when he went 8-4 and led the National League with 24 saves while pacing the majors with 60 appearances; his save total shattered Hugh Casey's Brooklyn franchise record of 18. Hughes finished 15-13 with a 3.83 ERA, 39 saves, and 165 strikeouts. A member of four Dodger pennant winners (1952, 1953, 1955, 1956), his lone World Series outing came in Game 1 of the 1953 Fall Classic, relieving Carl Erskine and yielding a Yogi Berra home run over four innings. This card's back carries an uncorrected error, listing his birth year incorrectly (it should read 1923).
