1955 Topps #92 Don Zimmer
1955 Topps #92 Don Zimmer

About Don Zimmer
Don Zimmer signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers as an amateur free agent in 1949 and climbed through their farm system, a rise nearly ended in 1953 when a beaning at St. Paul fractured his skull, left him unconscious for two weeks, and required surgery. He recovered to debut in 1954 and played 12 major-league seasons as a scrappy utility infielder, chiefly shortstop, for the Dodgers (Brooklyn and Los Angeles), Cubs, Mets, Reds, and Senators. This is his rookie card, issued the year he helped Brooklyn win its only World Series title in 1955. A two-time All-Star, Zimmer hit .235 with 91 home runs and 352 RBI over 1,095 games and was MVP of the 1955 Caribbean Series. He was nicknamed "Popeye" for his resemblance to the cartoon sailor. After playing, he became a beloved baseball lifer, managing the Padres, Red Sox, Rangers, and Cubs (1989 NL Manager of the Year) and coaching Joe Torre's Yankees dynasty. He died in 2014 at age 83.
