About Milt Bolling
A slick-fielding shortstop out of Mobile, Alabama, Milton Joseph Bolling signed with the Boston Red Sox in 1948 after starring at McGill Institute, recruited by legendary scout George Digby over college offers. He climbed the Red Sox chain (Roanoke, Scranton, Birmingham) and reached the majors in September 1952, then held down Boston's shortstop job through 1957 before finishing with the Washington Senators (1957) and Detroit Tigers (1958). His finest year was 1953, when he hit a career-best .263 with 5 home runs; a serious ankle injury that July permanently altered his throwing and hampered his glove thereafter. Over seven seasons and 400 games he batted .241 with 19 home runs and 94 RBI. In 1958 he joined his younger brother Frank on the Tigers, forming one of only four brother second base-shortstop keystone combinations in big-league history. Never an All-Star, Bolling gave far more to the Red Sox off the field: he scouted the Southeast for decades, helping sign Tony Conigliaro and George Scott, and spent 43 years with the organization. He died in 2013 at age 82.
