1955 Topps #116 Tom Hurd

About Tom Hurd
Thomas Carr "Whitey" Hurd was a right-handed reliever whose 1955 Topps card (#116) is his rookie card. Signed by the Chicago White Sox in 1946 as a shortstop, he converted to pitching in the minors in 1948 and grinded through nearly a decade of the bushes before reaching the majors. Hurd debuted with the Boston Red Sox on July 30, 1954, and spent all three of his big-league seasons (1954-1956) in Boston, working exclusively out of the bullpen across 99 appearances. His finest year was 1955, when he went 6-2 and led the American League in wins by a relief pitcher with eight. Over his career he was 13-10 with a 3.96 ERA, 11 saves, and 96 strikeouts in 99 games. Nicknamed "Whitey," Hurd later starred in the minors, posting a 1.65 ERA for the 1958 Junior World Series champion Minneapolis Millers. A native of Danville, Virginia, he died in 1982.
