About Grady Hatton
A University of Texas standout (1939-43) who earned All-Southwest Conference honors three times and captained the 1943 SWC champions, Grady Hatton reached the majors in 1946 straight out of Army Air Corps service, signing with the Cincinnati Reds for a then-record rookie bonus and skipping the minors entirely. The left-handed-hitting third baseman (he also played second) made an immediate splash, batting .271 with 14 home runs and 69 RBI as a rookie, and anchored Cincinnati's infield through the early 1950s. He was named an NL reserve for the 1952 All-Star Game, though rain ended the contest before he could appear. Over 12 seasons (1946-1960) with the Reds, White Sox, Red Sox, Cardinals, Orioles, and Cubs, Hatton hit .254 with 1,068 hits, 91 homers, and 533 RBI in 1,312 games. This 1955 card shows him during his Boston tenure; the Boston Traveler soon dubbed him "Grade-A" for his personal integrity. He later managed the Houston Astros (1966-68) and scouted for decades, dying in 2013 at age 90.
