About Ted Lepcio

Thaddeus Stanley "Ted" Lepcio (July 28, 1929 - December 11, 2019) was a right-handed utility infielder who signed with the Boston Red Sox out of Seton Hall University in 1951 and, after fewer than 90 minor-league games, made the big-league club the next spring. A dependable glove at second base, third base, and shortstop, he played 10 major-league seasons (1952-1961) for the Red Sox (1952-1959), Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago White Sox, and Minnesota Twins, batting .245 with 512 hits, 69 home runs, and 251 RBI over 729 games. Never an All-Star, he was known more for defense and occasional pop than average; his best year was 1956, when he hit .261 with career highs of 15 homers and 51 RBI, nine of those long balls coming in an 18-day burst. Fittingly for this 1955 Topps issue, on Opening Day that April 12 Lepcio became the first Red Sox player to homer twice in a season opener, going deep twice while playing third base in a 7-1 win at Baltimore. "Ted" was simply short for Thaddeus.
