About Hal Brown

A control-artist knuckleballer, Hal Brown (full name Hector Harold Brown) signed with the Boston Red Sox out of Greensboro, North Carolina, originally as a shortstop before converting to the mound. After Army Air Force service in World War II, he broke into the majors with the Chicago White Sox in 1951 and pitched 14 big-league seasons (1951-1964) for the White Sox, Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees, and Houston Colt .45s, working as both a starter and reliever. He went 85-92 with a 3.81 ERA and 710 strikeouts over 358 appearances. His best years came in Baltimore, where he twice led the AL in fewest walks per nine innings (1959-60), posted a 12-5, 3.06 mark in 1960, and threw a one-hitter against the Yankees on June 1, 1960 (Mickey Mantle's homer the lone hit). Nicknamed "Skinny" - ironically, by his family, since he was a chubby baby - he appears here as "Skinny Brown," and was inducted into the Orioles Hall of Fame in 1991.
