About Pinky Higgins
Card #150 pictures Michael Franklin "Pinky" Higgins in his role as Boston Red Sox manager, the job he took over in 1955. A hard-hitting third baseman before he managed, Higgins earned an athletic scholarship to the University of Texas and signed with the Philadelphia Athletics, debuting in 1930. Over 14 big-league seasons with the Athletics (1930, 1933-1936), Red Sox (1937-1938, 1946), and Tigers (1939-1944), he batted .292 with 1,941 hits, 140 home runs, and 1,075 RBI in 1,802 games, made three All-Star teams (1934, 1936, 1944), and reached the World Series with Detroit in 1940 and Boston in 1946 (both seven-game losses). In June 1938 he set a record with base hits in 12 consecutive at-bats, a mark later tied by Walt Dropo in 1952. Nicknamed "Pinky" as an infant for his rosy complexion - a name he disliked, often going by "Mike" - he managed the Red Sox from 1955 into the early 1960s (560-556), remaining the club's second-winningest skipper until Terry Francona passed him in 2009.
