About Ellis Kinder
A right-hander whose big-league career started remarkably late, Ellis Kinder signed with Jackson's Class D club in 1939 at age 24 after working as a field laborer and railroad pipe-fitter, and did not reach the majors until he debuted with the St. Louis Browns in 1946 at 31. He pitched 12 seasons for the Browns (1946-47), Boston Red Sox (1948-55), St. Louis Cardinals (1956), and Chicago White Sox (1956-57), finishing 102-71 with a 3.43 ERA, 749 strikeouts, and 102 saves over 484 games. His finest year was 1949, when he went 23-6 and led the American League in shutouts (6) and winning percentage (.793), earning The Sporting News Pitcher of the Year honors; that season ended in heartbreak when Boston lost the pennant to the Yankees in the October 2 finale, manager Joe McCarthy having pinch-hit for Kinder. Moved to the bullpen in 1951, he became one of the AL's premier relievers, leading the league in saves in 1951 and 1953 and pioneering the ace-reliever role. Nicknamed "Old Folks" for pitching effectively into his 40s, he died in 1968 at 54.
