About Steve Bilko

A power-hitting first baseman from Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, Steve Bilko (1928-1978) signed with the St. Louis Cardinals organization at 16 and made his major-league debut in September 1949. Over ten big-league seasons he played for the Cardinals (1949-54), Cubs (1954), Reds and Dodgers (1958), Tigers (1960), and the expansion Los Angeles Angels (1961-62), batting .249 with 76 home runs and 276 RBI in 600 games. But his legend was forged in the minors: with the Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast League he won three straight MVP awards and home-run titles from 1955-1957, capped by a 1956 Triple Crown season (a .360 average, 55 homers, and 164 RBI) for a 107-win pennant winner. Nicknamed "Stout Steve" for his burly build, he became a cult figure at Wrigley Field in L.A.; the Phil Silvers TV con man "Sgt. Bilko" is often linked to him, though Silvers denied naming the character after him. Bilko was inducted into the PCL Hall of Fame in 2003. This card carries an uncorrected back error (a stat line that should read ".338 in '47").
