About Dick Hall

A five-sport athlete and economics graduate of Swarthmore College, Richard Wallace "Dick" Hall was signed by Branch Rickey's Pittsburgh Pirates for a $25,000 bonus in 1951 and reached the majors in 1952 as an outfielder. This 1955 Topps card is his rookie card, catching him mid-transformation: he started 84 games in the Pirates outfield in 1954 but hit only .239, and in 1955 remade himself into a pitcher. That reinvention paid off over a 19-season career (1952-1957, 1959-1971) with the Pirates, Kansas City Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, and Philadelphia Phillies. A right-hander with pinpoint control, he went 93-75 with a 3.32 ERA, 741 strikeouts, and 68 saves, famed for issuing almost no walks. Nicknamed "Turkey" for an unorthodox delivery he likened to "a drunken giraffe on roller skates," Hall became a mainstay of the Orioles bullpen, winning World Series titles in 1966 and 1970 and pitching in the Series at age 41 in 1971. A working CPA in the offseasons, he was inducted into the Orioles Hall of Fame in 1989 and died in 2023 at 92.
