About Windy McCall
A San Francisco-born left-hander and World War II Marine Corps veteran who saw combat at Iwo Jima and Okinawa, John William "Windy" McCall pitched batting practice for the Red Sox before signing with Boston scout Charlie Wallgren for a $6,000 bonus. He debuted in 1948 and worked seven big-league seasons across the Boston Red Sox (1948-49), Pittsburgh Pirates (1950), and New York Giants (1954-57), mostly out of the bullpen. Over 134 appearances he went 11-15 with a 4.22 ERA, 144 strikeouts, and 12 saves. His nickname came from Ted Williams in 1948, who dubbed him "the windy one" after the young pitcher told the star to bring up his good bats during batting practice; McCall shrugged it off, saying "names don't hurt much, base hits hurt more." He was a member of the Giants' 1954 World Series championship club, though he did not pitch in that Series. Card #42 is his rookie card, issued the year his career peaked with a 6-5, 3.69 mark in 1955.
