1955 Topps #43 Harvey Haddix

About Harvey Haddix
A crafty left-handed pitcher, Harvey Haddix reached the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals in August 1952 and pitched 14 seasons (1952-1965) for the Cardinals, Phillies, Reds, Pirates and Orioles. He was a three-time All-Star (1953-1955) during his Cardinals years and later won three straight Gold Gloves (1958-1960). Nicknamed "The Kitten" by Triple-A Columbus general manager George Sisler Jr., who likened the undersized lefty to Cardinals veteran Harry "The Cat" Brecheen, Haddix is best remembered for May 26, 1959, when he retired 36 consecutive Milwaukee Braves over 12 perfect innings before a 13th-inning error broke it up and Pittsburgh lost 1-0 - the finest game a pitcher ever lost. He also went 2-0 for the Pirates' 1960 World Series champions, taking the mound in relief and earning pitcher-of-record honors when Bill Mazeroski walked off Game 7. Haddix finished 136-113 with a 3.63 ERA and 1,575 strikeouts.
