About Wally Moon
A left-handed-hitting outfielder out of Texas A&M - where he earned a master's degree - Wally Moon reached the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1954, taking over in the outfield for the traded fan favorite Enos Slaughter. He answered "We want Slaughter" chants by homering in his very first at-bat on Opening Day and went on to hit .304 with 12 homers and 193 hits, winning the 1954 National League Rookie of the Year award. Moon spent 12 seasons split between the Cardinals (1954-58) and Los Angeles Dodgers (1959-65), was a three-time All-Star, and won a Gold Glove in left field in 1960. After moving to L.A., he crafted an inside-out swing to loft opposite-field home runs over the Coliseum's towering 42-foot left-field screen - blasts dubbed "Moon Shots" by broadcaster Vin Scully. He won three World Series titles with the Dodgers (1959, 1963, 1965). Moon batted .289 with 142 home runs and 661 RBI over 1,457 games. His 1955 Topps card (his second-year issue) is known with a minor variation - the presence or absence of the red dot over the "e" in his signed given name "Wallace."
