About Lou Limmer
A left-handed-hitting first baseman from the Bronx, Lou Limmer signed with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1946 and starred in the minors, leading the American Association with 29 home runs and 111 RBI for the 1950 St. Paul Saints en route to Rookie of the Year honors. He reached the majors with the A's in 1951 and, after a return to the minors, played his final big-league season in 1954, batting .202 with 19 home runs and 62 RBI over 209 games. Limmer authored several memorable moments: he homered off Vic Raschi in his first career at-bat on April 23, 1951, and on September 25, 1954, he hit the last home run ever struck by a player in a Philadelphia Athletics uniform before the franchise moved to Kansas City - the city that appears on this 1955 Topps card, though Limmer never actually played for the Kansas City A's. One of the era's notable Jewish ballplayers, he took part in what is cited as baseball's first all-Jewish batter-pitcher-catcher confrontation (May 2, 1951) and later became, by his own account, the only former major leaguer to serve as president of a synagogue. He is enshrined in the Philadelphia Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
