About Vic Power
Vic Power (Victor Felipe Pellot Pove), born November 1, 1927, in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, was a slick-fielding first baseman who reached the majors in 1954 and played 12 seasons (1954-1965) with the Athletics, Indians, Twins, Angels, and Phillies. Signed by the Yankees, he tore up the minors, leading the American Association at .349 with 217 hits in 1953, but New York refused to promote its first Black player and traded him to the Athletics; Elston Howard debuted for the Yankees instead. A multi-time All-Star, first selected in 1955, Power won the first seven Gold Gloves ever awarded to an AL first baseman (1958-1964), famous for his flashy one-handed catches. On August 14, 1958, he stole home twice in one game, the first player to do so since 1927. He hit .284 with 126 home runs and 658 RBI over 1,627 games. The surname "Power" came from a schoolteacher's change to his mother's name "Pove"; on this #30 card the back misprints his birth year as 1931. He is regarded as one of Puerto Rico's greatest players.
