About Herm Wehmeier

A Cincinnati native, right-hander Herm Wehmeier was signed by the hometown Reds out of Western Hills High School and reached the majors as an 18-year-old in 1945. Over 13 seasons (1945, 1947-1958) he pitched for the Reds/Redlegs, Phillies, Cardinals, and Tigers, finishing 92-108 with a 4.80 ERA and 794 strikeouts across 361 games. Wild command defined his early years -- he led the NL in walks in 1949, 1950, and 1952 -- and impatient Crosley Field fans made him their "whipping boy." His signature moment came after a trade to St. Louis: on September 29, 1956, in the heat of the pennant race, he outdueled Warren Spahn over 12 innings for a 2-1 win Spahn called the most heartbreaking of his career, part of Wehmeier's best season (12-9, 3.69 ERA). He later scouted for Cincinnati and recommended signing fellow Western Hills alum Pete Rose. Wehmeier died in 1973 at age 46. This card is known with a minor signature-dot / back-asterisk variation.
