About Ted Kazanski
Theodore Stanley Kazanski, born January 25, 1934 in Hamtramck, Michigan, was one of the most highly rated schoolboy players of his era, signing with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1951 for a reported $100,000 bonus. The right-handed infielder played his entire six-year major-league career with the Phillies (1953-1958), primarily at shortstop and later second base. He announced himself in his 1953 debut, going 3-for-6 with four RBI to lead Philadelphia to a 13-2 rout of the Cubs at Wrigley Field, becoming the first player since 1920 to drive in four runs as a shortstop in his big-league debut. His signature moment came on August 8, 1956, when he hit an inside-the-park grand slam and started a triple play in the same game against the New York Giants, a feat not duplicated until Angel Pagan in 2010. A slick fielder who never matched his bonus billing at the plate, he batted .217 with 288 hits, 14 home runs, and 116 RBI over 417 games, then coached in the Detroit Tigers organization.
