About Danny Schell
Clyde Daniel "Danny" Schell was a right-handed outfielder from Fostoria, Michigan, who signed with the Philadelphia Phillies organization in 1948. After years in the minors, he broke through in 1953 by leading the Class A Eastern League in both hits (185) and batting average (.333), earning a spot on the Phillies' 1954 Opening Day roster. Schell debuted on April 13, 1954, at age 26 and spent that season alternating in left field with veteran Del Ennis, starting 58 games. He enjoyed a fine rookie year, batting .281 with 77 hits, 14 doubles, three triples and seven home runs; on June 26, 1954, he went 4-for-4 with a home run in a 10-3 win over the Milwaukee Braves that gave Robin Roberts his tenth victory. After just two games in 1955 he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals organization and finished his 11-season pro career in the high minors through 1958. Over 94 major-league games he hit .281 with 7 home runs and 33 RBI. This is Schell's only Topps card and his lone regular-issue rookie card. He died of a heart attack in Mayville, Michigan, in 1972 at age 44.
