About Ray Herbert

A right-handed pitcher born December 15, 1929, in Detroit, Ray Herbert was discovered on a local sandlot by Tigers scout "Wish" Egan and, after a stint with Triple-A Toledo, debuted with Detroit in 1950. His 1955 Topps card (#138) catches him as a Tiger early in a 14-season career that also took him to the Kansas City Athletics (1955, 1958-61), the Chicago White Sox (1961-64), and the Philadelphia Phillies (1965-66). Herbert's signature year came in 1962, when he won 20 games (20-9, 3.27 ERA) for the White Sox and earned his lone All-Star selection; in the second 1962 All-Star Game at Wrigley Field he pitched three scoreless relief innings and took the win, retiring future Hall of Famers Hank Aaron, Stan Musial, Frank Robinson, and Orlando Cepeda. In 1963 he led the American League with seven shutouts. He finished 104-107 with a 4.01 ERA and 864 strikeouts over 407 games, then threw batting practice for the Tigers for roughly three decades. Herbert died December 20, 2022, at age 93.
