About Frank House
A prized "bonus baby," catcher Frank House signed with the Detroit Tigers in 1948 straight out of Hueytown High School in Alabama, reportedly for $75,000 and two automobiles, one of the largest bonuses of its era. The left-handed hitter debuted with Detroit on July 21, 1950, at age 20, then lost the 1951 and 1952 seasons to military service. Over a 10-year career he caught for the Tigers (1950-51, 1954-57, 1961), Kansas City Athletics (1958-59) and Cincinnati Reds (1960), batting .248 with 47 home runs and 235 RBI in 653 games. His most productive year was 1955, the season of this card, when he hit .259 with career highs of 15 home runs and 53 RBI in 102 games. Nicknamed "Pig" as a baby, when his family said he was "big as a house" and he twisted "big" into "pig," House later served in the Alabama Legislature, helped found the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, and was inducted into it in 1975. He died in 2005.
