About Eddie Miksis

Signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1944 out of Trenton (N.J.) High School, Eddie Miksis reached the majors that June at just 17 years old and went on to play 14 big-league seasons (1944-1958). A right-handed utility man who covered all four infield spots and the outfield, he served the Dodgers (1944, 1946-1951), Chicago Cubs (1951-1956, his team on this card), St. Louis Cardinals (1957), Baltimore Orioles (1957-1958) and Cincinnati Redlegs (1958). His signature moment came in Game 4 of the 1947 World Series against the Yankees: pinch-running for injured Pete Reiser, Miksis raced home with the winning run on Cookie Lavagetto's ninth-inning pinch double, the hit that broke up Bill Bevens' bid for the first World Series no-hitter. His best year was 1953, when he set career highs with 142 games and 145 hits for the Cubs; as a Cub he is also remembered for lending his glove to rookie Ernie Banks in Banks' first big-league game. Over 1,042 games Miksis batted .236 with 44 home runs and 228 RBI. He died in 2005 at age 78.
