About Gene Stephens

Glen Eugene "Gene" Stephens (1933-2019) was a lanky, left-handed-hitting outfielder signed by the Boston Red Sox out of Arkansas; in his first pro season at Class D High Point-Thomasville he hit .337 with 22 home runs and 112 RBI as an 18-year-old. He reached the majors with Boston in 1952 and played a dozen seasons (1952-1964) for the Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, Kansas City Athletics and Chicago White Sox, later finishing his career in Japan. For much of the mid-1950s he was known as Ted Williams' "caddy" - a label he disliked - serving as the Splendid Splinter's primary late-inning replacement in left field at Fenway Park. Stephens owns a lasting piece of baseball history: on June 18, 1953, during Boston's 17-run seventh inning of a 23-3 rout of Detroit, he became the first major leaguer of the modern (post-1900) era to collect three hits in a single inning, stroking a double and two singles off three different pitchers; only Johnny Damon (2003), also a Red Sox, has since matched it. Over 964 big-league games he batted .240 with 460 hits, 37 home runs and 207 RBI. This card is a fourth-series high number (#301-340), the scarcer end of the 1956 Topps set.
